Sofa Pillow Options- Need YOUR Vote!

Hello Hello! Can you believe this is the third week in a row that I posted something!? (Yeah...me neither considering some crabby babies over here. )
Anyhoo...I had a birthday a couple of weeks ago and my husband asked me what I wanted for my birthday. I told him to not buy me anything, that I wanted to pick out some pillow covers for the couch! So I am in need of a little help from all of you.

I bought this floral fabric when we were in Williamsburg last year. I know it isn't quite fall-ish, but I really love the colors and think it will help me steer the living room in the direction I want to go. The picture below reads more red than it really is in person. The background is more of a coral color.

My mother-in law was nice enough to sew the pillows for me since I would have to clean off an inch of dust off of my sewing machine. Haven't seen that sweet girl in months! The pillows below are my inspiration:

I am loving the contrast between the dark piping and the light neutral back. There are so many colors to pull from in this pillow that I am having a hard time deciding on a pillow combination for the couch.

I currently have two large pillows on my gray sectional. I wrote about simplicity a while back and this post was my inspiration for why I chose only TWO pillows

Well after a few years of loving on these pillows it is time for a change! Take a look at my five options below and let me know what you all think!

I have to admit this one is a favorite of mine. I like the modern against the traditional. I feel as though my house is a bit like this combination. I have a mix of traditional family pieces as well as modern fixtures and lines within my home.

Goldenrod Square Key PillowTeal Velvet Pillow
I get a more traditional vibe from the pillows above. The velvet lumbar adds a bit of texture as well as the pattern play between the other two.

Citron Velvet PillowDalmatian Print Pillow
This combination is a bit more modern. I love the dalmatian print against the floral. It really kicks the wow factor up a notch!

Gray & White Pattern PillowGoldenrod Square Key Pillow
Pattern, Pattern Pattern! This combination is also fun, but not sure I can pull it off!

Gray & White Pillow, Teal Velvet Pillow, Goldenrod Square Key PillowDalmatian print pillow
This last option has a mix of all the pillows to create a bit of interest. I do love this look and could really use a mix against the sectional.

Okay...your turn! Which option is your favorite OR do you have another combination you think might wow me? Give me your best shot!

A Reader's Design Dilemma {Living Room & Playroom}

I absolutely love helping others with the design of their spaces. I feel privileged that friends and reader's trust my judgement and allow me to help create a unique space in their Haven. So wish I could do this full time!..Maybe someday.

A few weeks ago I was contacted by Ashton and here is what she wrote:

Hello Amy,

First of all, thank you for providing such inspiration through your blog. I look forward to your posts each week, and I appreciate your attention to detail!

We bought our home almost two years ago, after falling in love with the neighborhood and the house's potential. Not only was it in a perfect family-friendly location, but the neighborhood had huge, beautiful trees in every yard, and children playing everywhere.

After changing out every light fixture, door knob, hinge, etc., and painting 4 of the 10 rooms, we were still stumped on what to do with the awkward "room" at the front of the house. It was supposed to be the formal dining room, but we love the cozy breakfast nook, and as a family of three, we simply don't need a dining space. I had huge dreams of turning this space into an extension of the living room and providing a "sophisticated" play room for our daughter, but I have been very hesitant to make any big furniture or window treatment decisions until I can visualize how the spaces will blend and come together. I have spent the last two years trying to come up with a solution, and after perusing Etsy, Pinterest, and Houzz for countless hours, I think it's time for a new opinion!

Our couches and jute rug have to stay for the time-being, but other than that, it is a blank slate! I found a pillow with the color palette I love for the space, but that's as far as I have gotten. I would love to see what you envision, and I welcome any ideas you might have!

Thank you,
Ashton
*********************************************************************************************

Let me tell you how much fun I have had working with Ashton over the past several weeks. I wish she lived around the corner...we would be life long friends! I also wanted to let you all know that Ashton and her hubby are very handy, so they were up for DIY challenges to save on money!

So let's give you a little peek into Ashton's home. They have really done an amazing job updating their space with paint and fixtures. It looks like a brand new home! Her trouble spots have been the dining area, which she would like to create a play space for her daughter and her living area with fireplace.

Ashton also sent a pictures of this pillow. She was specific about using this color palette throughout the spaces to tie them together. I am loving these colors and you will see how I have incorporated them into each space below.

Now that you get a feel for Ashton's space, lets break her space up into zones. It helps me stay focus on one specific section of the room at a time, or else I get overwhelmed with large spaces!

Zone One: Dining room turned sophisticated playroom.

This is where I wanted to create that fun space for her little girl, but also a space the mom's can hang out when there are play dates going on. Ashton needed some storage for toys and books as well as a spot to sit!

I wish this was my space! The chairs and rug give that play area a sophisticated look, but the toys and artwork make it kid friendly! I suggested a wall of built-ins or bookcases to fill the large space where she has her gallery wall. We will then move the gallery wall to a different location.

Also, in that same zone  I would like to give her little girl an art area with table, chairs and a place to hang her artwork and pictures. So the above picture has a great little nook between the front door and the windows.

Ashton is going to add some curtains with a contrasting trim for the front windows. She is also going to DIY a pin board for her daughters artwork and pictures. I love these little metal green chairs that add another textured element to her space.

Zone 2: Living room

Like Ashton told us in her letter, they will be keeping the couches and rug for now to save on money. I think she placed those couches perfectly in that space. They are anchored around the TV, but also the fireplace so that either can be the focal point. She was in need of some color and texture in this space. So here is what I came up with for the TV area.

Because her furniture is floating away from the walls, Ashton is in desperate need of some mood lighting. I think that adding some sconces on either side of the TV would give them a little extra lighting instead of having to turn on the overhead fan to light the space. The TV wall also needed to be filled with artwork and pictures and what a great way to display them with a gallery wall that surrounds the TV. This gives that wall some interest rather than always looking at a large black screen. Adding some large baskets will also give them a place to toss toys, blankets and/or pillows for a quick clean up.

I also gave Ashton suggestions on pillow options for her couches. You all know I am a pillow addict! The more the better! You can see the sources for the pillows Here.

Zone 3: Fireplace & Sitting area

I felt like this little corner needed a little spice and warmth!

Another seating area would be great for entertaining or to just snuggle up by the fire with a cup of coffee. Because there isn't much space for curtains between the fireplace and wall area I opted for a flat panel cornice or valence to add some height and interest to the windows. Also, since most items in the room have a square or rectangle shape I added a round mirror above the fireplace as well as a little round side table.

Well I think I covered most everything! Ashton just emailed me yesterday to tell me that she has already ordered the pillows and prints that will be used in her spaces and the curtains for the front room are ready for trim! I am so excited to see how it all turns out.

If you would like to see some of the sources and inspiration used behind these design boards follow Ashton's Pinterest Board Here

What do you all think? Any suggestions for Ashton?

{DIY} Geometric Pillow Made From Striped Fabric

Hello Hello and Happy Hump Day! I hope you all are having a fabulous week. I am so enjoying the cooler weather here in NC (finally) and have slowly started to pull out the Fall and Halloween Decorations. Hope to have some of my Fall decor up on the blog next week.

Today we are talking DIY pillows. I am a pillow freak. My grandfather who is 89 tells me that it takes him forever to get all the pillows off the guestroom bed before he can go to sleep! ...bless his heart. You may remember my easy Napkin Pillows and my unique lumbar pillows that I have made over the past few years.

A few months ago I found this little beauty on this Etsy site and was considering buying it for our guest bedroom. Luckily I procrastinated because I found a simple DIY on my friend Brittany's blog and knew I could recreate the look for A LOT less.  It looked easy enough to tackle and I had all the supplies on hand...a plus!

I used a piece of cardboard to make a template for the four triangles that Brittany Mentions here. The pillow went together fairly quickly! I think I may make a bunch for each room of the house! (kidding...not kidding)

Here is my final beauty!

And here is a little sneak peek of what has been going on in the guest room. Hope to share more with you very very soon!

Next up...I want to try and make these little beauties from striped fabric. Aren't they fun?

Two Pillows Made for our Couch

Hope you all had a wonderful long weekend with family and friends. The Hubs was out of town this weekend, so I was excited to get some major projects done around the house! Can you believe that I tackled his whole office and it is almost done? I can't wait to share some of the DIY's and updates very soon.

A few months ago I showed you some inspirational pictures of living rooms, with one idea in mind...

...adding simplicity into my pillow hoarding abilities. I wanted to keep our new sectional couch clean and simple. No more millions of pillows being tossed here and there.

Here is a BEFORE picture so you can really get a feel for the space:

And...here is the After:

Don't you think that two pillows that add a little drama are better than a whole mess that don't do anything for the space!? I am really loving how they look. They just add a bit of glam and color to the much needed living room.

I used an Ikat fabric from JoAnn's that I purchased months ago. It is from their Mill Creek line. I added a gray linen to the back. Believe it or not, this pillow was made from a body pillow that was purchase from target. I had to cut it down a bit to get the exact size I wanted. These pillows are pretty large. The measurements are right around 19"x38". Aren't they just fabulous!? hehe

Here is one last before and after.....

So what do you think!? Could you pair down your pillows and just create some large ones that give a sense of simplicity?

P.S. Who noticed the the new curtains as well? That DIY is for another post! Stay Tuned!

A Little Crate & Barrel Pillow Hacking

A few weeks ago, my mother in law came to visit and we did a little damage at a nearby mall.

One of my favorite stores is Crate & Barrel and I fell in love with this floor pillow as soon as I saw it:
It fit perfect into the fabric and pattern scheme in the family room.
The only problem....it was $69.95 !!!!

I just couldn't justify spending that kind of money on a floor pillow that my husband is going to lay on and rest his dirty feet! hehe

Then we came across this beauty:
2x3 Olin Gold Rug $19.95!!

And within a few seconds we both looked at each other and decided we could totally make our own pillow out of the striped rug! It was $50 cheaper!!

So we bought the rug and then were off to JoAnn Fabrics. We bought some thick Canvas for the backing for $7.00 and a 24x24 pillow insert for $10.00. So the grand total was only $37.00! Still an amazing savings!!

We cut the canvas to the 24x24 size pillow and over-lapped the back to create a pocket, so it would be easy to clean.

Then we stitched around the outside, sewing the rug and canvas together. We had to use a pretty heavy needle because it was going through three layers of fabric. We doubled up on the canvas since it was going to be thrown on the floor.....hoping it would last a bit longer

And the Finished Product!

Not to shabby huh? I think it will be used a lot in this home!

See what I mean!?

Happy Monday All!

Fabric Scheme for a Fall Living room

Can you believe that we have our windows open in North Carolina today? It is just beautiful and I now have a little Fall Fever. How about you?

Speaking of Fall....I have started putting together some of the Fabrics I would like to use for our living room during the Fall season.

Last week I told you about my little lumbar inspiration for the sectional couch. That is what started my obsession of finding some patterns and colors that would work in our space.

I love the Mustard color that we see in wheat fields and on colorful leaves in the Fall. Some people really don't like that mus-tardy-yellow...Not me! As you all have figured out, I pretty much love every color in the rainbow if it is paired with the right accessories and Fabrics!!

So here is the plan:

1. The Yellow stripe is going to be made into a floor pillow so it will add a little punch below the sofa.

2. This Moroccan inspired Yellow Fabric that I found at Jo-Ann's will help me recover the rocking chair seat that is currently sitting in the corner of the living room. Also, if I have enough fabric leftover I would love to add a small tab to the side of my floor to ceiling white grommet curtains.

3. Not sure if I will use this pillow or not, but I made it from some napkins I found in Kiawah last year.

4. I am in love with this Ikat fabric that I also found at JoAnn Fabrics. I will make the Lumbar Pillows out of this fabric and might also use what is leftover to spread this color in the kitchen area.

I am anxious to find some time this week to finish some living room projects!

What colors inspire you and get you in that Fall mood?

Less Pillows....More Drama

Most of you know that I am kind of a pillow snob. Not in the way that I spend hundreds of dollars on one pillow, I am more like a pillow hoarder. It isn't rare for me to have around 8 pillows on our bed or the guest room bed. I also change out the pillows on our couch with the different seasons. Right now I have 7 pillows on our couch and two pillows on each chair in the living room.

I need a change for Fall. I mean...isn't that what fall is all about. Simplicity and change.

How about Less pillows, but add a little more drama?

Here is what I am crushing these days......Long Lumbar pillows.

Here are the pillows on the couch as of this morning:
(Sorry for the bad pics taken by my phone)

I am hoping to have some lumbar pillows made for fall to give this couch a
simple more relaxed feel like the one below:

Can't you just breath in this space!

What do you think about less pillows, but larger with more drama!?

Now I need to pick the fabric. That is the hard part!
