Tuesday Treats #21 {Inspiration from around the web}

Well it is back in the 90's here in NC this week. Our beautiful weather has now turned into hot hot summer. I wish I could send some of this weather to some of you. I know that my family that lives in NY really didn't get much of a summer. I am ready for fall...boots, light sweaters, windows open, etc. Until then I will stalk my friends that have pools.

I am back with another round up of links and inspiration from around the web. If you want to follow my weekly picks on Pinterest you can click HERE.

#1 Fall Shoes:
Since I am getting ready for fall I am thinking a pair of slingbacks is a must. I love both of these looks for sure! Now the decision ...open toe or closed? What do you think?

#2: Summer's 10 Best Grill Recipes:
I found this receipe on pinterest this past week and since it is peach season, you better believe I am going to make this grilled peach and portobello sandwich. Yum! For All 10 Recipe's click HERE

#3 Kid's Milestone Picture:
I absolutely love the idea of taking one picture each year of your child and typing his/her likes and what they enjoy doing. It would be so amazing to look back at these photos and remember those times. I'm storing this away for the future for sure!

#4 Fabulous Breakfast Nook:
How amazing is this light and bright breakfast nook. I am obsessed with the textures and neutral colors. It is such an inviting spot to sip some coffee, host a brunch or get some work done. Maybe my next house will have a nook. One can wish!

#5 Be Yourself:
In a world full of social media, pinterest, hollywood...it is so easy to get wrapped up in trying to be someone else. The world would be a boring place if we were all the same. God gave each one of us different talents, figures, budgets, families and it is time to start being ourselves and enjoying the beauty that comes from it.

I hope you all are having a wonderful week! Sorry posting has been on the light side lately. Trying to finish up some projects and deal with life. Sometimes you just need to step away in order to regain focus and motivation!

Playroom Design Plan & My Go-to {Kid Items} for the Home

Ever since I designed this reader's playroom and this reader's family room , I have received numerous emails about needing ideas on how to organize kids spaces while making them feel cohesive, fun and family friendly.

So today I am sharing a couple of design boards filled with my go-to items for kids. Remember that it doesn't have to be pricey to be fabulous!

A Few Tips:
1. Look for items that have lids or covers to hide toys when company comes over.
2. Find fabric that it easy to clean.
3. Mix and match high-low items so your space doesn't feel like a fisher-price house.
4. Add pops of color and texture to keep children engaged when playing in the space.

Kids Space 1
White Shelves, ABC Art, Pendant Light, Tree Shelf, Teardrop Bean Bag Chair, 123 Bins,
  RugWicker Basket, Tassel Bins

The space above was inspired by the ABC art print. Lots of vibrant colors to pull from! This space could be for any age child. I especially love the bean bag chair that gives that chartreuse pop to the space.

Kids Space 2

Animal Print Art, Pendant Light, Kids Wicker Chair, Striped Tent, Art Organizer, Supply Cart,
White Dipped Baskets, Campfire, White Cube table, Gray Bins Organizer

The second space is a little more subdued with calming black, white & grays with pops of turquoise and coral. Those animal art prints are hands down my favorite art for kids spaces. There are so many different animals to choose from and the 8x10's are only $25. Can you believe that the kids wicker chair is only $20 at Ikea!? Loving all the organization the bins, cart & art caddy can bring to this space as well.

So are you convinced that you can have a fun kids space that says fabulous!?

Tell me...what are your go to items for organizing your kid's toys?

Reader's Spaces

I just love this little ole blog, especially when I get fun emails from reader's with pretty finished spaces!

You all might remember this Reader's Redesign that I did for a client last Fall:

Well little by little Ashton and her husband are finishing their space. She recently sent me pictures of her daughter's play corner.

Here is the plan that I sent them last fall:

Below is the before and after they sent me:

Doesn't it look great? Ashton is also finishing the curtains that will be hung in this space. I can't wait to see how they transform this little corner. I am sure her sweet little girl loves this art corner. They bought an old Pottery Barn Kids table and chairs from their aunt and refinished the pieces. Here is what they looked like before:

So fun! Thanks Ashton for keeping me posted on your living room/playroom area!
If you want to check out all the before pictures of her space as well as the design plan click HERE.

********************************************************************************

I have met so many amazing people through this blog that every time I connect with someone I just get so excited to chat about design, decorating, diy projects, etc. People probably think I am a little over the top at times! Well, this next reader and I have something else in common. Carly adopted a little girl a couple of years ago and she reached out to me after I posted our Adoption Announcement this past fall. We have even talked on the phone a couple of times. She is an amazing person and I am so thankful she has a heart for adoption. She has sure helped me through some down days.

A couple of weeks ago Carly texted me one evening and wanted some advice on painting stripes. She had seen our Bold Entryway stripes and was inspired to try her hand at it. She sent me these after pictures:

I think they did a fantastic job! Stripes are very tricky if they aren't done correctly. Isn't that turquoise table adorable? I love the pops of color that she has added to her entryway.

A couple of days later Carly sent me the picture below. We talked about how painting the banister and railings would really brighten the space up. What do you think?

There is no question that the stripes and white railings take this builder grade entryway to another level!

Thanks to Ashton & Carly for sharing their updated spaces! I love seeing reader's progress and how they are inspired by this little ole blog.

Have you been working on any projects around your home? Do you need a total Reader's Redesign to get you motivated? Email me your pictures and we can create a space that you love.

Happy Hump Day All!!

Tuesday Treats #15 {Inspiration & Ideas from around the web}

Hi All! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. I was able to spend mother's day at the beach with my niece and nephew. I usually have a hard time with this day knowing that I am just "waiting" to be a mama. But spending the day with my sister-in law and her kids was just what I needed to remind me of how many blessings I truly have in my life. I am a mom in my heart and God has a sweet baby boy or girl in mind for me and hubby. I can't wait to be able to celebrate being a mom next year!

Sorry about no post yesterday. For some reason I can't get on our new wireless while at the beach. I am calling support this morning so I can share some fun posts with all of you this week. The hubs let me borrow his computer for this post!

There has been so many fabulous projects that I have witnessed this past week and I can't wait to share some great ideas and inspiration from around the web today. Hope you enjoy!

My friend Kristen never disappoints me and ALWAYS amazes me at the talent she has. She recently revealed her backyard oasis on the Home Depot Blog. Kristen and her husband created this amazing space on their own. Doesn't it make you want to have a backyard party or even better... a date under the stars? For the full reveal and before pictures go HERE. For sources go HERE.

2. A Very Pink Playroom
If you don't follow the blog Dear Lillie, then you are missing out.  Everything Jennifer touches turns to amazing! You have to see the before and after pictures HERE of this darling playroom for her girls.

3. DIY Tassel Drink Stirs

4. DIY Garden Markers
I am sure most of you are getting your gardens ready for spring and summer. I really try every year to create some kid of garden journal or at least use garden markers to help me remember what I have planted. You all know that I am in love with these stoneware garden markers from Arrow & Sage, but if you are trying to save a little money I love these quick and easy ideas too:

5. Five Amazing Uses for Coconut Oil
I don't know about you, but I love anything coconut! I drink mostly coconut milk now or at least a combination of coconut and almond milk. Coconut oil is suppose to be great for your body and I love these five uses below written by Lauren Conrad's editors. I have also used coconut oil as an eye makeup remover. Tuesday Treats #7- {Inspiration from around the web}

It has been a while since I have posted some finds from around the web! There are always so many fabulous DIY ideas, outfit inspiration and even fabulous recipes I find and forget to share with all of you. I am going to try and be better about sharing in 2014!! :)

Today's Treats are a mix of decorating, fashion and food! Enjoy!

1. Winter Printable via JDC
Do you all remember when I shared the fall essentials printable a few months ago? It was just adorable. Well Emily has designed a winter one and it is as cute as can be! I am trying to decide where I can place this sweet print in my home. You can download a free one for yourself Here!!

2. Butternut squash, spinach & bacon Quiche
If you all follow me on Instagram, you may have seen our dinner a few nights ago. It was this amazing Quiche that just melts in your mouth! I have been trying a lot of different recipe's lately and this one is on top of the list for one of the best! In the recipe it calls for Arugula, but I substituted it for Spinach because that was all I had on hand at the time. I would also recommend spending the extra dollar and buying the Butternut Squash that is already cut up in the produce section. That took a little time waiting for the squash to cook and then waiting for it to cool so I could cut it up and place in the Quiche. Other than that...it was DE-LISH!

3. Modern Farmhouse Dining room
I came across this designer/builder a couple of weeks ago. I of course have been stalking their site and looking at all their fabulous projects, but the one that was my all-time favorite was the Modern Farmhouse. I couldn't get over the rustic, modern, industrial design that they have placed together for this amazing space. You must go HERE and check out the rest of the beautiful home.

4. Plaid & Fur
For some reason I just can't get enough of the fur look this season. Many of you remember my Faux Fur Vest story and how I loved the new fur trend. I saw the look below this week on pinterest and haven't been able to get it off my mind. I just love the plaid and fur combo! I may have to try it out for myself this week.

5. Dining room turned little girl's room
One of my fellow blogging friends, Kristen, just did a major change in her sweet Atlanta home. They decided they didn't use their dining room enough and made it into their little girl's room. She used what she had around the house to create this adorable space. Go Here for all the pictures & Here for the details.

So that's today's round up!!
Have you found any great ideas lately that have inspired you or that you want to try in 2014? Do share!

Stay warm my sweets! The Polar Vortex has hit here in NC, but at least the sun is still shinning!! xoxo

A Reader's Design Dilemma {Living Room & Playroom}

I absolutely love helping others with the design of their spaces. I feel privileged that friends and reader's trust my judgement and allow me to help create a unique space in their Haven. So wish I could do this full time!..Maybe someday.

A few weeks ago I was contacted by Ashton and here is what she wrote:

Hello Amy,

First of all, thank you for providing such inspiration through your blog. I look forward to your posts each week, and I appreciate your attention to detail!

We bought our home almost two years ago, after falling in love with the neighborhood and the house's potential. Not only was it in a perfect family-friendly location, but the neighborhood had huge, beautiful trees in every yard, and children playing everywhere.

After changing out every light fixture, door knob, hinge, etc., and painting 4 of the 10 rooms, we were still stumped on what to do with the awkward "room" at the front of the house. It was supposed to be the formal dining room, but we love the cozy breakfast nook, and as a family of three, we simply don't need a dining space. I had huge dreams of turning this space into an extension of the living room and providing a "sophisticated" play room for our daughter, but I have been very hesitant to make any big furniture or window treatment decisions until I can visualize how the spaces will blend and come together. I have spent the last two years trying to come up with a solution, and after perusing Etsy, Pinterest, and Houzz for countless hours, I think it's time for a new opinion!

Our couches and jute rug have to stay for the time-being, but other than that, it is a blank slate! I found a pillow with the color palette I love for the space, but that's as far as I have gotten. I would love to see what you envision, and I welcome any ideas you might have!

Thank you,
Ashton
*********************************************************************************************

Let me tell you how much fun I have had working with Ashton over the past several weeks. I wish she lived around the corner...we would be life long friends! I also wanted to let you all know that Ashton and her hubby are very handy, so they were up for DIY challenges to save on money!

So let's give you a little peek into Ashton's home. They have really done an amazing job updating their space with paint and fixtures. It looks like a brand new home! Her trouble spots have been the dining area, which she would like to create a play space for her daughter and her living area with fireplace.

Ashton also sent a pictures of this pillow. She was specific about using this color palette throughout the spaces to tie them together. I am loving these colors and you will see how I have incorporated them into each space below.

Now that you get a feel for Ashton's space, lets break her space up into zones. It helps me stay focus on one specific section of the room at a time, or else I get overwhelmed with large spaces!

Zone One: Dining room turned sophisticated playroom.

This is where I wanted to create that fun space for her little girl, but also a space the mom's can hang out when there are play dates going on. Ashton needed some storage for toys and books as well as a spot to sit!

I wish this was my space! The chairs and rug give that play area a sophisticated look, but the toys and artwork make it kid friendly! I suggested a wall of built-ins or bookcases to fill the large space where she has her gallery wall. We will then move the gallery wall to a different location.

Also, in that same zone  I would like to give her little girl an art area with table, chairs and a place to hang her artwork and pictures. So the above picture has a great little nook between the front door and the windows.

Ashton is going to add some curtains with a contrasting trim for the front windows. She is also going to DIY a pin board for her daughters artwork and pictures. I love these little metal green chairs that add another textured element to her space.

Zone 2: Living room

Like Ashton told us in her letter, they will be keeping the couches and rug for now to save on money. I think she placed those couches perfectly in that space. They are anchored around the TV, but also the fireplace so that either can be the focal point. She was in need of some color and texture in this space. So here is what I came up with for the TV area.

Because her furniture is floating away from the walls, Ashton is in desperate need of some mood lighting. I think that adding some sconces on either side of the TV would give them a little extra lighting instead of having to turn on the overhead fan to light the space. The TV wall also needed to be filled with artwork and pictures and what a great way to display them with a gallery wall that surrounds the TV. This gives that wall some interest rather than always looking at a large black screen. Adding some large baskets will also give them a place to toss toys, blankets and/or pillows for a quick clean up.

I also gave Ashton suggestions on pillow options for her couches. You all know I am a pillow addict! The more the better! You can see the sources for the pillows Here.

Zone 3: Fireplace & Sitting area

I felt like this little corner needed a little spice and warmth!

Another seating area would be great for entertaining or to just snuggle up by the fire with a cup of coffee. Because there isn't much space for curtains between the fireplace and wall area I opted for a flat panel cornice or valence to add some height and interest to the windows. Also, since most items in the room have a square or rectangle shape I added a round mirror above the fireplace as well as a little round side table.

Well I think I covered most everything! Ashton just emailed me yesterday to tell me that she has already ordered the pillows and prints that will be used in her spaces and the curtains for the front room are ready for trim! I am so excited to see how it all turns out.

What do you all think? Any suggestions for Ashton?
