Organizing all those DVDs!!!

Well I hope my last post encouraged some of you to change your preferences so that we can have more fabulous conversations! I can't wait to be able to respond to more of you!

You all have been quite motivating when it comes to following through with my 2012 resolution! I should have started this blog years ago! I would have been so organized!

As you enter our home there is a very small area to take off shoes, coats, etc. We needed a landing place of somesort for visitors to sit and put on shoes or a place to throw purses and such. We found this cute bench peice at an outlet near Highpoint, NC.

It has served its purpose well, however it has taken on duties that really didn't fit in this space.....

Yep...storing our DVDs. And yes...also some VHS!!

I am sure by now you are all asking yourselves "Why are videos in the entryway?" My question exactly! I guess it was a space to throw them when we first moved in.

Well...out with the old....in with the new!

I spent an hour or so going through all of the movies. I ended up with 2 bags for the Goodwill...

And many piles on my livingroom floor.....

It was time to condense these videos! I didn't want to keep many videos that I would have to pile through each time I wanted to watch a movie.

That is when Target (my best friend) came in to help!

I found this CD box on the sale rack! ($5.58)

And also these CD/DVD protectors for like $2.00!

I started taking the covers of the movies out of the large plastic jackets as well as the DVD itself. I then had to trim the covers just about a centimeter off of one side so that I could fit them into the colored sleeves. I folded the cover in half and slipped the cover and video into a protector.

This took me about 2 hours, but it was well worth it! All of my piles are now into one small video box!

They looked great, but I needed someway of finding the movies quickly without flipping through each one. It was the dreaded time of putting these DVDs into ABC order! Do you remember doing this in school? I caught myself singing the abc song many times throughout this step.

I used some extra paper and letter stickers from the good ole scrapbooking days.
(I knew all these extras would come in handy someday!)

I was pretty stinkin excited at this point! All of our DVDs in one basket!!! SERIOUSLY!

The best part of all this organization is that our videos are actually tucked away in a basket near the TV! Isn't that a bright idea?.....Actually having the videos near the technology that uses them!

Wanna see?

Oh yeah...pretty pumped! Only saved a few exercise videos and Wii games out of the mix! Everything has its place and I can check another 2012 goal off the list!

How are all of your 2012 projects coming? It is only February...you have lots of time!

  1. This is an awesome idea! But can I give you one suggestion?

We recently had all of our video games and some of our movies stolen! They can sell them without their cases even. And with your movies and games in such an easy carry case it would be too easy for them to walk out the door. Keep a list of your movies and games somewhere else in your house so that if (heaven forbid) you get broken into then you have a list already compiled for the police.

    1. There were probably around 80 or so DVDs. Not too many.

  6. Where did you get the colored CD keepers??

  7. You made this sound so easy, so I ran out and purchased the supplies. The very first one I tried, the title cover doesn't fit into the colored pocket, even by folding in half! Did you trim each one and forget to mention that?!?

  8. I might have had to trim the sides just a slight bit. Can't remember now! I also folded the bottom of each cover under just about an inch. Thanks for letting me know! I will have to insert this into the directions!

  9. What a great idea! I am doing this with my DVDs now! I even managed to get my husband to get rid of about 50% of our DVDs in the process. What a difference this will make in how our media cabinet looks and functions! :)

  10. Took your idea and did the same for my music cds - I used the clear ones for music because it was much easier to see the cover, but for my movies & game cds I used the color ones. I found baskets from Target that fit them perfectly. I also bought one of those collapsable shelves and put it in my entertainment center so I could double up the baskets. Great idea - saves a ton of space :-)

  12. Okay, so, I have WAY more than 80 movies, but that's cool. My issue is TV shows with boxes. Not the metal one like Band of Brothers, but regular cardboard boxes. I really like this idea, but... call me sentimental? How would you deal with taking these apart? Just to give you an idea of the issue I'm dealing with, I have 50 complete TV show series with an average of 5 seasons for each series.... Yeah, it's a ton, but a TON of space as well. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

    1. Seems like you are quite the movie collector! I would maybe break the serious down into smaller boxes. They have DVD boxes at Target. Since you probably don't use them all of the time, you could label these boxes and place them in a nearby closet. That way they wouldn't take up so much room. I wouldn't take the sets apart....you never know what they may be worth someday!

  13. A majority of our dvds does not have cases/covers for them. What would you recommend doing instead?? I'm really interested in doing this project.

  14. Absolute GENIUS!!!!!! A couple people mentioned not being sure what to do with TV series. I went online, Googled the TV show, then downloaded my favorite images. I pulled them up in my photo editing app and added the show title, season and episode #s. But if you don't have that, a small sticker in the corner would work just as well. I put each season together in a large rubber band. It worked for my 8 seasons of Supernatural and my husband's Band of Brothers. And the boxes are safely stored in the basement. I also had several movies that I'd long ago lost the cases, so I did the same with them. Now I'm wishing I hadn't bought all my music on iTunes so I could do this with those CDs as well. (Just Kidding)

    1. I recycled them! I know they will never be worth anything and I didn't want the clutter in my house. So I thought that was the best option!

  16. Just a note: if you're left with a pile of empty DVD cases, ask your local library if they want them!! DVD cases are pretty flimsy, and don't last very long. Your library most likely would be happy to take your clean, intact, empty DVD cases! :)
